Techniques of Yoga Therapy

what is yoga therapy?

Each type of Yoga can be therapeutic and healing when it is practiced consciously. Yoga therapy is a holistic science which uses yoga specifically for its health promoting effects and which is individually tailored to each client.

Yoga can aid the healing of chronic diseases and improves particullar habitual movement patterns and helps to integrate the "wholeness" of the body. Unlike most sports and fitness exercises who are mostly to strong for weakened people, yoga therapy is a gentle, thorough and deep acting method of healing.

The first and most important step in yoga therapy is to determine the individual needs which vary widely from person to person. Ayurveda as sister-science is very helpful because it provides the tools to the individual constitution to determine men and a combination of yogic and ayurvedic practices and recommendations who provide a large bandwidth to treat the body-mind complex. Yoga can help determine and change ways of thinking and behavour (samskaras). Especially the "fight and flight" response.

Some of the tools that are a part of the wide spectrum of yoga therapy are:

Ayurveda - Determination of the basic constitution and the current state by observing, asking, tongue and pulse diagnose.

Diet - Foods are proposed based on their Ayurvedic properties to equilibrate the elements in the body.

Psychology - work with the yogic philosophy, especially the Yoga Sutras and the practice of Yoga Nidra, a guided deep relaxation who includes a resolution or intension.

Lifestyle - Simple, but very effective advices such as not to be destructed during meals, sleeping early or taking a long walk in the nature every Saturday or to read a book instead of watching TV.

Pranayama - to learn to breath fully and deeply. Thereby gain the ability to focus and concentrate in stressful times and moments and to remain calm.

Jyotish - Respecting the connection to the stars and planets and the Vedic astrology as an aid in the diagnosis and assessment of the current constitution.

Shatkarmas - cleaning exercises - just as you brush your teeth every day there are various useful prozedures depending on the constitution such as Jala Neti, the yogic nasal wash, Agni Sar Kriya to activate defacation or Tratak, focusing on a candle flame to purify the thoughts.

Asanas - the body exercises nowadays provide the basis of modern yoga. If they are practiced with the mindfullness and right attitude, they can transform. But even if they are practiced for their physical effects, they can work the organs and strenghten their functions, increase muscle tone, improve posture and much more.

Meditation - according to Yoga Philosophy, our mind behaves like a monkey, uncontrolled and chaotic. Meditation helps us to understand our mind to the ability to get to truly relax, to calm down, yet hightly vigilant and to be present.

Dinacharya - a daily routine can be extremely helpful. Ayurveda provides many recommendations on how to start the day, so you have energy for the whole day and how to end it so you have a relaxing evening and a good night.

Mantra - Sanskrit is the language of mantras. Sanskrit is a phonetic language and the sounds have a very specific vibration that can penetrate deep into the physical and energetic body.

Continuum Movement - is an invitation to the watery being and an invitation to shift focus to more of what we are. It is a movement practice where we use sound to stimulate the fluid system of the body. The teacher is within yourself.
